Startup Perks Worth Knowing About
The earliest version of this post was written in early 2024. By 2026 the terms across these vendors have changed a great deal (the most notable being that Microsoft Founders Hub no longer hands out OpenAI credit directly, AWS/Cloudflare each added dedicated GenAI tiers, and Anthropic launched a standalone startup program). This rewrite takes the chance to maximize the coverage and flag the important bits.
If you can’t be bothered to comb through each vendor’s site one by one, there’s an aggregator that helps with side-by-side comparison: https://startupcredits.io/
At the bottom there’s a short summary of “which ones require a VC referral / accelerator recommendation.” Indie developers can jump straight to the end.
The Cloud-Vendor Trio
AWS Activate
Link: https://aws.amazon.com/startups/credits
Tiers (2026):
- Founders tier: $1,000 credit. Self-funded/bootstrapped applicants are eligible too; no referrer required.
- Portfolio tier: up to $100,000. Requires association with an AWS Activate Provider (a VC, accelerator, or partner organization).
- GenAI Accelerator tier: up to $300,000 (new in 2026). Specifically for teams training/deploying LLMs, AI-first.
Requirements: founded no more than 10 years ago, pre-Series B, a paid AWS account, and a company website.
Included: technical support credit, training, and architecture review. Review takes roughly 7–10 business days.
Google Cloud for Startups
Link: https://cloud.google.com/startup
Tiers:
- Start tier: about $2,000. Bootstrapped applicants can get this too.
- Scale tier: up to $200,000. Requires Seed–Series A stage funding.
- AI Startup tier: up to $350,000 ($250K in year one + $100K in year two, with at least 20% utilization required). Conditional on your product using Vertex AI / Gemini at its core.
Included: $12K of Enhanced Support credit, 12 months of free Workspace Business Plus, $600/month in Maps API credit, and architecture review.
Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub
Link: https://foundershub.startups.microsoft.com/signup
Tiers:
- Basic: $1,000 Azure credit. No barrier to entry; just self-serve sign-up.
- Enhanced: about $5,000, after a company-credentials review.
- AI tier: up to $150,000, requires a VC / accelerator association.
Included: GitHub Enterprise, Visual Studio Enterprise, Microsoft 365 Business Premium, and 1:1 expert consultation.
Important change (2026): The $2,500 OpenAI credit that Founders Hub used to bundle in has been discontinued. Now if you want to use OpenAI models, you go through Azure OpenAI Service and pay with Azure Sponsorship credit.
How to apply: sign in via LinkedIn and fill out a form. No company entity required; the site says you typically get a result within 3 business days.
AI / LLM Tokens
OpenAI for Startups & OpenAI Grove
Apply directly: https://openai.com/startups/
OpenAI Grove: https://openai.com/index/openai-grove/
Two paths:
- Direct application: through the official portal. No VC required, and any stage (including just having an idea) can apply, but the allocation is smaller and goes through a “OpenAI used at the product’s core” review.
- OpenAI Grove: $50,000 in API credit + a 5-week founder program (about 15 people per cohort). Cohort 2 closed in January 2026; watch the site for the next one. The mentors are OpenAI researchers, and you get early access to unreleased models.
- Accelerator channel: YC / Techstars / 500 Global and the like can give you a referral code.
Anthropic for Startups (Claude)
Link: https://claude.com/programs/startups
Tiers:
- Standard tier: $1K–$5K credit.
- Partner / Premium tier: $5K–$25K+, applied for through Anthropic’s partner VCs / accelerators, with a handful of reported $25K–$100K+ cases.
- Credit is valid for 12 months.
Requirements: an early-stage company actually building a product on the Claude API, not just kicking the tires.
Included: office hours with the Anthropic team, community events, and all Claude models (Opus / Sonnet / Haiku).
Of particular note for readers in China: Anthropic’s program terms explicitly exclude mainland China (along with Belarus, Cuba, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Sudan, Syria, Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk). If your company entity is based in China, you cannot apply.
NVIDIA Inception
Link: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/startups/
Cost: free, no equity, apply anytime.
Includes:
- 30% off DGX Cloud
- 75% off NVIDIA AI Enterprise
- Free DLI training credit and SDK access
- Partner cloud credit (up to $100K AWS Activate, $150K Nebius)
- Inception Capital Connect (VC introductions)
Requirements: company already registered, has a website, at least 1 developer, founded no more than 10 years ago. No funding required; any stage is fine.
Indie-developer friendliness: high.
Company Incorporation + Banking Bundles
Stripe Atlas
Link: https://stripe.com/atlas
A $500 registration fee (unchanged in 2026) covers company incorporation / EIN / opening a Mercury bank account in one go.
Bundled perks:
- $2,500 in Stripe processing-fee credit
- $5,000 AWS credit (issued automatically through Activate)
- The official pitch is “$50K+” in partner perks, with $20K+ actually redeemable within 30 days
- Discounts / credit for Notion, HubSpot, Mercury, Segment, Intercom, Carta, Webflow, and more
- Microsoft Founders Hub (still requires a separate application; not granted automatically)
Full perks list: https://support.stripe.com/questions/stripe-atlas-perks-partners
For non-US bootstrapped founders, Atlas remains the most efficient “entry point,” because many perks require a US company entity.
Mercury / Brex / Ramp (Banking + Cards)
- Mercury: https://mercury.com. Free business account + the IO credit card with 1.5% cash back on everything, no personal guarantee. The default choice for early-stage / bootstrapped companies.
- Brex: https://brex.com. Skews toward VC-backed eligibility. 7x on rideshare, 4x on hotels and flights, 3x on restaurants.
- Ramp: https://ramp.com. $250 sign-up bonus + 1.5% cash back, with expense management as its strong suit.
Going through the Mercury channel via Stripe Atlas comes with an extra account-opening bonus: deposit $20,000 within 60 days for $1,000 (C corp) / spend $10,000 within 60 days for $500 (LLC).
SaaS / Tools
Cloudflare for Startups
Link: https://www.cloudflare.com/forstartups/
Four tiers:
- $5,000: bootstrap / stealth, no funding or partner required
- $25,000: funding < $1M, requires LinkedIn
- $100,000: Seed stage, $1–5M raised, requires a Cloudflare partner
- $250,000: top-of-the-line
Note: R2 / Cache Reserve usage is capped at $10K; Workers AI usage is capped at $50K. Valid for 1 year or until used up.
Requirements: a SaaS / software product, founded no more than 5 years ago, with a matching website email. Agencies / services firms are not eligible.
DigitalOcean Hatch
Link: https://www.digitalocean.com/startups
Up to $100,000 in compute credit / 12 months (no extension) + up to 3 months of free GPU Droplets + a Hatch-exclusive $1.90/hour GPU rate.
Requirements: funding ≤ $10M (AI-first), a company website + a company-domain email.
Additional: 15 months of free Standard support, 1:1 PM contact, and marketplace exposure.
Vercel for Startups
Link: https://vercel.com/startups
12+ months of free Pro plan + platform credit up to $50K (a select few partner channels reach $200K). The Vercel AI Accelerator is a separate, standalone cohort program.
The largest allocations go through a partner, but for a bootstrapper, getting 12 months of Pro is already well worth it.
MongoDB Atlas for Startups
Link: https://www.mongodb.com/solutions/startups
Up to $5,000 credit (higher for VC-backed companies), with 12 months to activate and 12 months to use.
Requirements: pre-Series A, building a product (not doing outsourced work), first-time applicant, and a website. Both new and existing Atlas users are eligible.
Additional: a dedicated technical advisor and the AI Innovators track.
Datadog for Startups
Link: https://www.datadoghq.com/partner/datadog-for-startups/
$30,000–$100,000 in Pro credit, for 12 months or until your next funding round (whichever comes first).
Requirements: never used Datadog before, and you must go through a referral partner (VC / accelerator)—applying directly as a bootstrapper won’t work.
Note: accounts inactive for 3 months get removed.
HubSpot for Startups
Link: https://www.hubspot.com/startups
Discounts:
- 90% off year one / 50% off year two / 25% off thereafter, conditional on funding < $2M
- 50% off year one / 25% off thereafter, for funding of $2M–Series A
Requirements: a Professional or Enterprise plan, a new customer, and you must go through a HubSpot-recognized partner (VC / accelerator / Solutions Partner).
The easiest way for a bootstrapper to get in is to find a HubSpot Solutions Partner to make the referral.
Notion for Startups
Link: https://www.notion.com/startups
- Through a partner you can get 6 months of free Business plan (including Notion AI)
- Direct application with no partner but meeting the criteria: 3 months free
- An SMB with < 10 people: 1 month
Requirements: < 100 people, a custom-domain email (no Gmail / Outlook), not currently paying, and not having claimed a similar perk before.
Linear for Startups
Link: https://linear.app/startups
Through a partner you can get 6 months of Basic / Business free. Otherwise the free tier is already generous: up to 250 people, with unlimited issues / projects.
Requirements: < 50 people, not currently paying, and a Linear partner association.
A Quick Reference: Which Ones Don’t Need a VC
Available by direct application (bootstrappers / indie developers, look here first):
- AWS Activate Founders ($1K)
- Microsoft Founders Hub (about $5K)
- Cloudflare $5K tier
- NVIDIA Inception (free, no barrier to entry)
- DigitalOcean Hatch
- MongoDB Atlas ($5K)
- Notion (3 months)
- Linear free tier
- Mercury (account opening)
- Anthropic standard tier
- OpenAI direct application
- Stripe Atlas (incorporating a company—the entry point to the whole ecosystem)
Partner required (if you don’t have a partner, you can route around it via the Stripe Atlas ecosystem, an accelerator, or a Solutions Partner):
- HubSpot 90% tier
- Datadog ($30K+)
- Linear 6-month discount
- Notion 6-month tier
- Cloudflare / AWS / Vercel top tiers
Special note for China-based entities: Anthropic’s program explicitly excludes mainland China. The other vendors don’t have this clause, but some payment / banking steps require a US company entity (which is exactly where Stripe Atlas earns its keep).
